Bringing it Back to the Patient

Everyone is talking about patient engagement, improving adherence, quality measures, etc. because we have similar goals of positively impacting patients’ lives while improving quality and decreasing healthcare costs. Traditionally, research has emphasized the development of either pharmaceuticals to treat diseases or care management programs to tell people how to deal with their diseases. I believe we are taking the wrong approach. Instead of focusing on the disease, we need to focus on the patient as a person with a disease. This would result in a shift from the frame of "a disease within a patient" to "a patient with a disease." During this lively and engaging Roundtable Discussion, we will react to ideas shared throughout the day with the ultimate goal of discussing what is needed in terms of data, new technology and general mind/cultural shift for a conversion of focus from disease first to patient first - all from a multi-stakeholder perspective.

Medication Adherence - The Pulse Points

The Gold Standard for the measurement of medication adherence is the calculation of the PDC – Proportion of Days Covered. However, numerous other measurements – direct and indirect can be calculated that not only assist in rating a members' medication adherence but also points to specific areas for intervention with the member.

During this roundtable, I would like for us to have a collaborative discussion on the types of medication adherence measurements that can be used, what they actually tell us and share “pearls of wisdom” on the successes and pitfalls of their uses.
