| The inaugural World Competitive Cities Congress marks the launch of
an initiative spearheaded by The World Bank and the World Economic Development
Congress aimed at promoting best practices in delivery of services; strategies for
IT and communications; investment and development of infrastructure; and responsible civic
and financial governance in large cities. The Congress will be evolved into a year round
initiative fostering dialogue between city governments, leading international
corporations, investors and financiers plus multilateral agencies and expert policy
advisors.
Participants in the initiative will have the opportunity to shape beneficial policy
reform and civic management strategies, mobilize investment and build partnerships between
governments and the international private sector for urban economic and social development
and investment.
Mayors Summit

This special closed door session facilitates roundtable discussion between
a select group of mayors and government executives from around the world with our select
panel of expert policy analysts, investors and business leaders. The Summit will allow the
exchange of experiences and best practice strategies for beneficial policy reform and
urban economic and social development.

These sessions will examine the major themes of the Congress and will convene leaders
of economic thought, executives from the worlds most competitive cities plus top
executives from the international private sector.
Critical Issue Sessions & Workshops

A series of open sessions will focus on critical issues in urban economic development.
Each session will convene panels of experts with differing perspectives on the same issue
allowing thorough analysis.
New Project & Investment Briefings

The Congress will allow opportunity for mayors and city executives to update the
international private sector on their latest policy initiatives, investment requirements
and new project opportunities via group briefings and one-on-one meetings.
Reception to Launch the Competitive Cities Award
Thursday 20 May 1999
The World Competitive City Award will be presented at the 2000 Competitive Cities
Congress to the city that has demonstrated the most innovative and successful initiatives
for urban economic development over the previous 12 months.
Recommendations and Post-Congress Report
The Congress will make recommendations on beneficial policy and best practice
strategies for the development of urban infrastructure and economies. These
recommendations will be published as part of the post-Congress Report on Competitiveness
in Cities.
