The new gTLD registries will be launching this year and brand owners must be prepared to protect their company and promote their brands. Trademark owners are encouraged to register their trademarks with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) as domain names during so-called Sunrise Periods. The TMCH then provides notifications to brand owners when an exact match domain name registration is made. It also provides notifications to potential registrants of domains matching TMCH entries. The TMCH is categorized as a Rights Protection Mechanism but it does not prevent registrations or block others from registering trademarks as domain names. Companies should plan to submit any trademark for which they desire a Sunrise registration, and this can be easily validated by the TMCH.
