10 ‘Facts’ on Accountable Care Organizations
Gary Baldwin
Health Data Management Blogs, May 31, 2011
I spent two days last week at the World Congress Leadership Summit on Accountable Care Organizations and my mind is just now recovering. As far as speaker quality goes, this conference (which offered concurrent tracks on ICD-10 and Meaningful Use) was top-notch, with dozens of speakers from hospitals, medical groups, payers, and consulting firms. There was a lot to absorb, but a few recurring themes came through. Here are my Top 10 takeaways from the conference…Click here to read more! |
On January 3, 2011, the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Program Registration and Attestation System portal went live, a major milestone in the government’s timeline to incentivize providers to demonstrate the “meaningful use” of certified EHRs to improve care delivery and for the exchange of information. Stage 1 Meaningful Use criteria have been published and Stages 2 and 3 requirements are currently open for debate. The health care industry has been given a call to action. There’s never been a more challenging time for providers to adopt, implement & optimize an EHR to reach quality of care goals & bend the cost curve. Especially with Attestation for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program beginning April 18; the last day to begin the 90-day reporting period for 2011 incentive payments July 3 for eligible hospitals & critical access hospitals; and Oct. 1 for eligible providers-- all major milestones in the government’s timeline to incentivize providers & demonstrate the “meaningful use” of certified EHRs to improve care delivery & exchange of information.
The World Congress 2nd Annual Leadership Summit on the Meaningful Use of Certified EHRs and Other Technologies to Improve Health Carewill convene delegates from hospital and health systems, medical groups, health plans, health information exchanges, states and government to discuss strategies for implementation and optimization of EHRs and other technologies that will meet the requirements for Meaningful Use.
- Develop a strategic plan to demonstrate Stage 1 Meaningful Use
- Manage the impact of HIT on physician workflow and patient safety
- Meet Meaningful Use thresholds and establish a behavior modification process at the provider level
- Obtain stimulus funds and learn lessons from practices who have been paid
- Implement best practices in integrating “patient contributed” data with your EHR
- Develop a financial sustainability plan for establishing and participating in an HIE
- Plan concurrently for HIPAA 5010, ICD-10 as well as demonstrate Meaningful Use
- Utilize clinical decision support tools, develop care transition programs and pharmacy applications to transform care
