In Shared Decision Making, well-informed patients work with their clinicians to agree on a course of treatment based on a blend of medical science, professional judgment and patient preferences. Patient Decision Aids are decision support tools that patients use both to understand their options and to express their values and preferences. When patients use these tools the rates of elective surgeries and their geographic variances often go down. Both shared decision making and patient decision aids are becoming increasingly important as a result of the Affordable Care Act and the new ACO and Patient Centered Medical Home delivery models.
The World Congress Annual Leadership Summit on Shared Decision Making will provide practitioners, policy makers and payers with a state-of-the-art discussion on the potential of Shared Decision Making to decrease over-utilization of certain services and treatments while increasing patient engagement and satisfaction with care. By attending this Summit, you’ll be able to:
- Evaluate approaches for mainstreaming patient decision aids within ACOs
- Assess the business case for committing resources to Shared Decision Making
- Develop strategies for tracking variation in care to identify areas of improvement to achieve the right level of utilization
- Use analytics to identify the patients and health care conditions most appropriate for Shared Decision Making
- Implement a physician and patient incentive program to encourage the use of Shared Decision Making
- Increase patient engagement through effective patient education methodologies
- Identify best practices for the implementation of Shared Decision Making
