Sixty percent of newborn infants worldwide suffer from jaundice, a condition that can be treated simply and safely by shining blue wavelength light on the skin (phototherapy). Left untreated, infants with jaundice can develop kernicterus leading to permanent neurological disabilities. Treating otherwise healthy newborns with jaundice is a tremendous opportunity to restore otherwise healthy infants back to full health. Design that Matters (DtM), the East Meets West Foundation (EMW), and Medical Technology Transfer and Services (MTTS) have launched a collaboration to develop a new, low-cost infant care device that will treat newborn jaundice during the critical first days of life. This effort will build on EMW’s and MTTS’ successful Breath of Life program and extensive network of collaborators across Southeast Asia, and DtM’s experience in the design of newborn technologies for the poor.
