CellScope: Telemicroscopy for Disease Diagnosis
Erik Douglas, Postdoctoral Scholar, University of California, Berkeley
Microscopy is the diagnostic standard for diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria, but the equipment and trained personnel are unavailable in much of the developing world. We are extending the concept of telemedicine to diagnostic microscopy with a system we call the CellScope, which we have demonstrated by adding a microscopy attachment to a conventional cell phone. It takes advantage of the robust cellular network in the developing world and the well-established technology of optical imaging to meet the tremendous demand for portable infectious disease diagnosis. Our system is capable of on-site diagnosis and wireless transmission of patient and location data to clinical centers for remote evaluation, patient management, and epidemiological surveillance. Carried by local health workers, this mobile and inexpensive technology will make high-quality microscopy widely accessible, improving patient care and relieving the burden on under-resourced clinics.
