This intense one-day boot camp showcases how hospitals use Lean
concepts to improve their facilities and operations. A Lean Master will
address the fundamental concepts of Lean and how hospitals utilize the
methodology to decrease their hospitals ED wait time, improve patient
flow, standardize processes and workflow to reduce waste within best in
class institutions.
Beginning with a comprehensive Lean overview, part one of the boot camp
will cover the history of Lean and how it has evolved into its current state.
Delegates will review the roadmap that a Lean deployment must follow
and some additional core principles of Lean including: The 8 Types of
Waste, Value Stream Mapping and 5S.
In part two of the boot camp delegates will participate in an Interactive
Simulation that teaches how to improve a conventional process, data
collection and process mapping, as well as how to understand customer's
value requirements. Participating in this hands-on portion of the event will
reinforce the tools and concepts previously introduced during part one.
In the final portion of the bootcamp you will get to hear about the
practical application of Lean in a hospital setting from Charleston Area
Medical Center (CAMC) and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. These
two organizations will share the following case studies:
- Reduce E.D. treatment time
- Improve workflow in specimen processing
- Reduce TAT time for STAT and routine tests

Mark Smith is an executive trainer and mentor with expertise in
strategic thinking, planning, change management and quality
improvement. Since 2004, he has helped Breakthrough Management
Group design curriculum for new, innovative courses that link strategy,
planning and culture change. Mark specifically focuses on the principles
of Lean, TRIZ and Hoshin Planning to help healthcare institutions
develop creative strategic plans.

Melda Brown, MBA, MT(ASCP)

Melda Brown was trained in Six Sigma performance improvement
methodology and became a full-time Black Belt in 2001. Since she has
joined Charleston Area Medical Center’s Six Sigma department she has
earned her certification as a Medical Technologist from the American
Society of Clinical Pathologists and has graduated from the University
of Charleston’s Executive MBA program. Her recent areas of focus at
CAMC as a Black Belt have been leading projects and serving as a
change agent as well as receiving additional training in the Lean
methodology.

Alex is a graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology with
training in Medical Laboratory Sciences in and Advanced Certification
in Medical Laboratory Sciences. He also holds a diploma in
Departmental Management from the Canadian Healthcare Association
and an MBA from City University in Bellevue, Washington. Alexander’s
focus as a laboratory manager and as a regional administrative
director at Vancouver Coastal Health Authority has been on Lean and
SCORE project work in their various labs.
