His life changing inventions include the first wearable infusion, a phone book-sized dialysis machine - at a time when similar devices were as big as dishwashers and required patients to make regular trips to dialysis centers., and the IBOT -- a robotic personal transporter that can climb stairs, traverse rugged terrain, and raise its user to eye-level with a standing person. His latest project has been creating a machine that can produce clean water cheaply and assist under-developed countries and regions gain access to a life saving, clean drinking water.

Among numerous accolades, Dean Kamen was awarded the National Medal of Technology by President Clinton in 2000 for inventions that have advanced medical care worldwide, and for innovative and imaginative leadership in awakening America to the excitement of science and technology; The Heinz Award in Technology; The Kilby Award, which celebrates those who make extraordinary contributions to society through science, technology, innovation, invention and education.
